If you’re searching for home care for a parent or loved one in Glasgow or the surrounding areas — Paisley, Barrhead, East Kilbride, Hamilton, Motherwell, or anywhere across west central Scotland — this guide will walk you through exactly what professional home care involves and how to find the right provider.

What is home care?

Home care (sometimes called domiciliary care or care at home) is professional support provided to someone in their own home. It’s the alternative to residential care — and for most people, it’s the strongly preferred one. Studies consistently show that the vast majority of older people want to remain in their own homes for as long as possible, and home care makes that possible.

Support can range from a single visit a day to multiple visits throughout the day, depending on the individual’s needs.

What does home care actually involve?

A good home care package is built entirely around the individual. Common forms of support include:

  • Personal care — help with washing, dressing, grooming, and continence
  • Medication administration — ensuring the right medication is taken at the right time
  • Meal preparation — planning, shopping for, and cooking nutritious meals
  • Companionship — regular visits that reduce isolation and support mental wellbeing
  • Housekeeping — keeping the home clean, safe, and comfortable
  • Shopping and errands — picking up prescriptions, groceries, and other essentials
  • Specialist support — for conditions including dementia, Parkinson’s, and post-surgery recovery

Is home care regulated in Scotland?

Yes — and it’s important. In Scotland, home care providers must be registered with the Care Inspectorate, the independent scrutiny and improvement body for care services. Always check that any provider you’re considering is registered. 24hr Response Care is registered with the Care Inspectorate.

All our carers hold an enhanced PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) certificate and are trained to SSSC standards, with ongoing specialist training in areas including dementia care and moving and handling.

How does care get started?

It starts with a free initial assessment — a conversation with the individual and their family to understand their needs, their routines, and what matters most to them. From that, a personalised care plan is created. Once agreed, care can typically start within 48 to 72 hours.
